Located in the heart of Birmingham, the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark is a reflection of over 100 years of twentieth-century iron making technology history and perspective of America’s Industrial Revolution.  The Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark received National Historic Landmark designation in 1981 and opened its gates in September 1983, as a museum of the City of Birmingham.  Parts of the original site are still preserved and used for community and civic events, concerts, festivals, and conferences, as well as workshops and exhibitions of metal art.
